Preliminary Task

Hello,

For our upcoming preliminary task, we have to plan, film and edit a short film segment involving a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue.

Within the task we have to demonstrate how to perform match on action, shot/reverse shot, and the 180-degree rule. Accomplishing each of these are tasks within themselves.

Match on Action
- Matching on action refers to film editing and video editing techniques where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action.

Shot/Reverse Shot
- Shot/reverse shot is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character, and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character.

180-degree Rule
-  An imaginary line called the axis connects the characters, and by keeping the camera on one side of this axis for every shot in the scene, the first character is always frame right of the second character, who is then always frame left of the first.

My group consists of three people; Daniel Winn (Actor/Editor), Dane Buckley (Cameraman/Editor) and myself, Daniel Haywood (Architectural Director/Editor). We feel we should all have a hand in the planning, storyboarding & editing as at the end of the day, it's our project and we should all decide collectively how the story pans out and how to edit the footage.

We feel that if we work cohesively and as a team, we can make a great piece of footage and really prepare ourselves for our main task.
